We’ve done our best to ensure the information on this page is accurate and up to date at the time of writing. However, insurers can change their terms, pricing and cover at any time. This page is for general information only and is not a substitute for full policy documentation, which you should always review to help you confirm that the cover meets your individual needs.
Our specialist advisers can walk you through Aviva’s core cover and optional extras, and check for any current offers. They’ll also compare Aviva’s cover and premiums against other leading UK providers so you can see if there’s a better fit for your needs and budget. Aviva’s Healthier Solutions policies are designed to be flexible, so you can tailor your cover to suit your needs and budget.
Core cover includes key benefits such as specialist consultations, diagnostic tests, hospital charges, full cancer cover and outpatient mental health treatment. Private hospital care for inpatient and day patient treatment is included as standard.
From there, you can shape the policy in different ways. For example, you can choose from several hospital lists, including options like Expert Select or Aviva’s standard hospital list, depending on where you’d like to receive treatment.
If you want broader protection, you can add optional extras such as dental and optical cover, extended mental health benefits, additional therapies like physiotherapy or acupuncture when referred by a GP, and protection for your no claim discount.
Alternatively, you can lower your premiums by adjusting certain parts of the policy. Options include reducing outpatient cover, choosing the six-week NHS option, increasing your excess, or selecting a smaller hospital list.
Policies also include a range of digital and wellbeing services, such as a 24/7 digital GP, mental health support, physio help and the MyHealthCounts online programme, plus discounts on gyms and wellbeing products.
Aviva also offers family-friendly pricing. If you add two or more children aged 19 or under, you only pay for the oldest until they turn 20. Adding a partner to the same policy can also work out cheaper than arranging separate cover.
These are the benefits you get as standard with Aviva’s Healthier Solutions. Like most private medical insurance, the cover focuses on acute conditions – new illnesses or injuries that are expected to respond quickly to treatment and help you return to your normal health.
It covers essentials such as diagnostic tests, outpatient treatment, hospital care, and cancer treatment, giving you solid protection from day one.
Benefit | What’s included |
|---|---|
Diagnostic tests | Specialist tests, such as x-rays, ultrasounds and blood tests. |
Inpatient & day patient treatment | Hospital charges, accommodation, meals, nursing, drugs, surgical dressings, theatre fees, specialists’ fees, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. |
Outpatient treatment | Specialist consultations, diagnostic tests and scans, and some therapies including physiotherapy, osteopathy and chiropractic. Psychiatric outpatient treatment is covered up to £2,000 on GP referral. |
Cancer care | Included on every policy. |
NHS hospital cash | £100 per night, up to 30 nights. |
Baby bonus | A £100 payment for each baby born or adopted while your policy is active, as long as Aviva is notified within 12 months. |
Home nursing | Immediately following inpatient or day patient treatment. |
Private ambulance | Full cover where medically necessary. |
Parent accommodation | One parent covered if a child aged 15 or under has to stay in hospital. |
Child speech therapy | Up to 2 sessions per child covered. |
Hospice donation | £70 per day for up to ten days if hospice care is required. |
You can enhance your base policy with add-ons for mental health services, therapies, extended hospital lists and other extras.
Add-on | What it covers |
|---|---|
Mental health upgrade | Up to 28 days of inpatient or day patient care for acute mental health conditions. |
Therapies | Treatment with a physio, osteopath, chiropractor, or acupuncturist referred by your GP |
Extended hospital list | Access to more hospitals (mainly Greater London) |
Dental & optical | Routine check-ups, glasses, lenses, hygienist visits. |
No claim discount protection | Helps keep future premiums down. |
Aviva goes beyond treatment by including a range of wellbeing and support services as part of your policy:
MyHealthCounts: A digital tool to help you better understand your health and lifestyle, with possible renewal discounts.
Aviva Digital GP: 24/7 GP video consultations and NHS repeat prescriptions via the app.
Get Active: Discounts on lifestyle products, over 4,000 fitness clubs, at-home and online workouts.
24-hour stress counselling helpline: Professional support anytime.
Mental health support: Guidance on a range of topics.
Cancer care with Get Active: Support and discounts for lifestyle changes during cancer treatment.
These services are all included with your cover, helping you look after your health and wellbeing alongside your treatment.
If you want to keep your monthly cost down, there are ways to adjust your policy without losing core protection.
Option | What this means for you |
|---|---|
Six-week option | You’ll still be covered for private inpatient or day patient treatment if NHS treatment isn’t available within six weeks. Not available in the Channel Islands or Isle of Man. |
Policy excess | You agree to pay a set amount towards any claim, from £100 to £5,000 per member, per policy year, which can help lower your premiums. |
Reduced hospital lists | You can choose a smaller list of hospitals, either the Signature list (Scotland & NI only) or the Trust list (local NHS Trust and Partnership private hospitals), which will affect your choice of where you can be treated through your policy. |
Reduced outpatient cover | You can reduce your outpatient cover to a limit of £0, £500, or £1,000 and remove certain outpatient benefits, though cancer treatment is always fully included. |
As with health insurance generally, Aviva’s coverage focuses on acute conditions rather than ongoing or chronic issues. Standard exclusions include:
Pre-existing conditions.
Birth control and infertility treatment.
Treatment for alcoholism or substance misuse.
Experimental treatment.
Chronic long-term conditions.
Cosmetic surgery.
Pregnancy and childbirth.
These exclusions are fairly standard across most leading health insurers; if policies covered all of these conditions, premiums would be unrealistically high.
Aviva works well for many people, but like any insurer, it might not suit everyone. Here’s a look at where this insurer’s offering may be less ideal for you:
Extended hospital list costs extra.
Other insurers may offer deeper mental health cover if that is your top priority.
Dental cover is only included as an optional extra, whereas some other insurers include dental check ups in their standard cover.
The great thing about Aviva’s Healthier Solutions policy is that you can tailor what’s included to suit your needs and budget. You can then compare your quote with other insurers to see which option works best for you.
Aviva tends to suit people who want strong treatment cover, cancer care, flexible policy options, mental health support and useful digital wellbeing services.
However, it may not be the best fit for everyone. For example, dental and optical cover aren’t included as standard and must be added as optional extras. Access to the full hospital list will also cost more, particularly if you want treatment in central London hospitals.
As with most private medical insurance, pre-existing conditions are typically excluded, so it’s important to check the terms and underwriting options carefully before deciding.
When it comes to choosing a policy, think about how it fits with your life. Our days are busier than ever, and having that 24/7 access to a GP via video consultation can be invaluable – especially if you’ve got little ones at home and can’t easily get to a doctor. And with so many of us experiencing stress at some point, having a 24-hour stress counselling helpline on hand can be a genuine game changer, giving valuable support when you need it most.
Our health insurance advisers can help. They will review your circumstances, talk you through Aviva’s coverage, and help you compare it against the other leading UK health insurers. Call us on 0800 144 4777 (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm) or request a call back at a time that suits you.
